What is the Mobility Evaluation Program?

The Mobility Evaluation Program (MEP) is part of the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) and serves DOR clients. We determine the adaptive driving equipment, vehicle, vehicle modifications, and training a client needs to be a safe and independent driver.

Our evaluation process has two parts—a clinical assessment to determine a client’s abilities in vision, cognition, and movement, and an on-road assessment to establish the person’s driving skills and how any problems found during the clinical assessment impact them. We also evaluate the needs of consumers who cannot drive and must travel as passengers. MEP’s staff are experienced driver rehabilitation professionals and include an occupational therapist/Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist, two driving instructors, and a rehabilitation engineer.

MEP is considered a high-tech driving program. Our extensive collection of state-of-the-art adaptive driving equipment and modified vehicles—we have seven vehicles, each with different equipment—maximizes our ability to match a client’s function and enables us to meet the needs of clients with a wide range of disabilities, including those with significant disabilities.

MEP works with the DOR’s vocational rehabilitation counselors to help clients achieve their vocational goals. After the evaluation, the counselor receives a report summarizing findings and recommendations. Interested clients should discuss their desire for an evaluation through MEP with their rehabilitation counselor.
